So far the results have not beenencouraging or conclusive. The treatment of the symptoms are thesame as that laid down for cerebrospinal meningitis. Meningitis Serosa (Qttixcke) (Acute Internal Hydrocephalus).—Meningitis serosa, or acute internal hydrocephalus, must not beconfounded with tuberculous meningitis, which formerly was calledacute internal hydrocephalus. Meningitis serosa was described in1893 by Quincke. Four years later Bonninghaus reported someof these cases, and since then a number have been described in theliterature. Occurrence and Definition.—It is a comparatively rare disease, andoccurs only between the ages of one and five years. In consistsof a serous inflammation of the extra- and intra-cerebral pia mater, and as a consequence of this inflammation there is an inflammatoryoedema in the subarachnoidal space, accompanied by acute internal Text Appearing After Image: £ c OQ r 0 a <u 0 a) _ - in - i p <D n 73 <T5 _ a - a u u MENINGITIS. 367 hydrocephalus, or serous exudate in the ventricles of the brain. Wehave two forms of this condition: in one the brain and membranesare found to be the seat of inflammatory oedema, in which the exu-date in the ventricles is comparatively small in amount; in the other.the more common form, there is a very large exudate in the ven-tricles, and the membranes of the brain and pia mater are but littleaffected. Etiology.—The etiology is not quite clear. Quincke insists thatthe condition may occur idiopathically, in a manner similar to anidiopathic pleurisy. Later authors are inclined to regard serousmeningitis, however, as an infectious process, due to the invasions ofstaphylococci or streptococci, which are found in the ventricular fluidremoved through lumbar puncture or postmortem. Some of thesecases may follow a chronic hydrocephalus; others may be traumaticor complicate an acute febrile disease, such as
